Communications component Above, a maasai woman is interviewed by Nation media group about the challenges of female genital mutilation-which is a common practise among the maasai people. The maasai area an indigenous pastoralist community in Kenya. As part of the Strategic Outreach unit Communications office has a long-term objective to disseminate information that will contribute towards the development of Kenya. This is thorugh the website and also various publications.The UNDP-Kenya website won the prestigious 2005 Cyberstar Award. This project aims to enhance the capacity of the media to play its role effectively in supporting the national focus on efficiency, transparency and accountability of all sectors in national life, through professional excellence in national collection and dissemination of news and information for sustainable development and poverty reduction. Communications Office is part of Outreach unitCommunications office also focuses on the organization and editing of a series of publications and discussion papers on technical aspects of development that are written by eminent or recognized experts (including but not limited to UNDP consultants) in their fields of expertise. These publications are hosted on the UNDP website and printed copies distributed to key contacts within the Government, the private sector and the civil society and academia, to spur and enhance debate on significant development issues. The communications office also manages the country office website. UNDP-Kenya utilizes this public website to put its 'best face forward', showing the world what it does,how it does it and why as well as to advocate the Millennium Development Goals. In celebration of this efforts, UNDP-Global Communications Office started a Cyberstar award in 2005. Kenya managed to be top ten an received an award for this. Click here for details
