Through the energy and industry focus area, UNDP Kenya has developed a programme to support and facilitate the development and distribution of sustainable energy services in Kenya for household needs, to offer income generating and employment opportunities, and to service all sectors of the economy.

UNDP-Kenya is working closely with Intermediate Technology Development Group-through a project called Practical Action. This collaboration has been documented in the publications Below:

Sustainable Charcoal Production-Read book on lelechwa

Lelechwa, Tarconanthus Camphoratus is a multi-stemmed shrub species naturally occurring in Africa and Arabia, and growing in poor soils typified by water deficient sites with rainfall amounts of between 500-1000mm in East Africa and extending to 1500-2200m in altitudinal ecological range.

These tree bushes form excellent tree crop that would consistently provide a sustained source of complimentary charcoal production in Kenya. Apart from slow burning high-grade charcoal production, lelechwa provides a range of products ranging from building poles (termite resistant), woodcarving and crafts, natural insect repellant, frankincense, wood tar, antiseptic, pharmaceutical and industrial products such as soap, production of paper.Click to read a book on lelechwa
