Output from the unit is directly linked to Millennium Development Goal 7, with targets in areas of strengthened national planning processes; land management and forest cover, biodiversity, energy access and use, and antipollution measures. Further, this programme component is linked and will benefit from world summit on sustainable development partnerships that include the Secretary-General's water, energy, health, agriculture and biodiversity, capacity 2015, global village energy partnership and new partnership for African development (NEPAD).

The programme component targets the following outcomes:

A. Integration of environment and poverty into national policies, strategies and planning processes.
B. Strengthening community level environment and natural resources governance.
C. Development and distribution of sustainable energy services to meet household needs, to offer income generating and employment opportunities and to service all sectors of the economy
