Nairobi - In recognizing the role of parliamentarians as key development agents and influencers, the UN Country Team (UNCT) is collaborating with the Kenya Parliamentary Caucus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to enable them to promote and advocate on the development goals. UNCT acknowledges that an active engagement by parliamentarians is critical in increasing public accountability for sustainable development through creation of policies and practices that are essential for achieving the SDGs.

“Parliament engagement with SDGs increases ownership, national discussions, consensus and fosters openness and transparency in tracking achievements. It’s exciting to see Parliamentarians engaging with SDGs we need to cascade this downwards and partner with county governments” - Hon. Kenneth Okoth, Chairman Parliamentary Caucus SDGs

The UNCT and the parliamentary Caucus held an inaugural meeting to discuss areas of collaboration with the aim of developing the capacity of parliamentarians to advance and advocate SDGs in Kenya. The meeting is in line with the UN’s role to assist Kenya in mainstreaming the SDGs into the work of the Parliament and effectively localizing the SDGs in all areas of Parliamentary work.

UNCT support will provide strategic opportunities for parliamentarians to influence Kenya’s development agenda based on practical examples of how other parliamentarians in Africa and other regions are engaging on similar approaches focusing on the unfinished business (End poverty, end hunger, ensure health lives, inclusive and quality education and achieve gender equality and empower women).

From the meeting, it was highlighted that in leaving no one behind the collaboration the UNCT and the Parliamentary Caucus on SDGs will help leverage partnerships with National government, counties, development actors, the private sector and CSOs to spearhead the implementation of the SDGs.

“Under the SDGs umbrella we see an exciting opportunity of working with parliamentary caucus to explore new partnerships and leverage innovation that will advance human and economic development.” Mr. Siddharth Chatterjee, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative for Kenya
