Nairobi, 1 February, 2017: Under UNDP’s Strengthening Electoral Processes in Kenya project, the Government of Italy will contribute to readiness for the 2017 elections and have on Wednesday 1 February 2017, entered into an agreement through which the Government of Italy will contribute One Million Euros to support the strengthening of IEBC’s institutional capacity, legislative frameworks, citizen participation in elections, and electoral dispute resolution.
“The aim of this common effort – Italy joins other donors in this initiative – is also to reach out to the Kenyan citizens and guarantee the inclusion of women, youth and persons with disabilities, both to vote and to be elected" said His Excellency, Mauro Massoni, Italy’s Ambassador to Kenya.
This tripartite partnership is strategic, as it facilitates the implementation of IEBC’s roadmap to the August 2017 General Elections, under the guiding principles of inclusion, equity, transparency, results orientation and collaboration.

Note to editors:
UNDP is one of UN agencies whose central mandate provides for electoral support to the UN Member States. UNDP has over the years performed this role within the framework of the Note of Guidance defining UN Role in Electoral Assistance (2001) as revised.
UN electoral assistance is provided only on the basis of a specific request from the national authorities, which, for Kenya, was received in 2014.
UNDP Strengthening Electoral Processes in Kenya (SEPK) (2015-2018) Project Document was approved and signed by the Government (led by the National Treasury) and UNDP on 7 July 2015. It was the product of extensive consultation with various stakeholders.
To date, the UNDP SEPK project has received resources for the current phase from various bilateral donors including the USAID, DFID and European Commission and Embassy of Ireland to support planning for constitutionally mandated institutions engaged in the electoral process. These include the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP).
