The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEFSGP)

The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme is a programme that operates in over 60 countries to give small grants to communities for biodiversity conservation , mitigation of Global Climate Change and protection of international waters. At the Mount Kenya World Heritage Site, the Kenya SGP has a special project called COMPACT, funded jointly by GEF and the United Nations Foundation (UNF).

What is COMPACT?

COMPACT is an acronym that stands for Community Management of Protected Areas Conservation.

The COMPACT project, which is operational in an additional 5 countries (Tanzania, Mexico, Belize, Dominica and the Philippines), strives to enhance conservation efforts within World Heritage Sites, through community-based initiatives. COMPACT realizes that communities living around protected areas can work alongside government authorities as essential players in the protection of the protected sites.
