"UNDP -GEF SMALL GRANTS PROGRAMME"Combining Energy Efficient Stoves and Woodlots in Schools has been one of the COMPACT (Community Management of Protected Areas Conservation) projects in Kenya. Following its successful implementation, it has been upgraded to a 1 million $ project in 2006. It was a former 50,000 $ project under the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme. This is a programme that operates in over 60 countries to give small grants to communities for biodiversity conservation , mitigation of Global Climate Change and protection of international waters. Click here to read an article in Standard Newspaper-28 May 2006 on the woodfuel project: article page1, article page2 The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEFSGP) The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme is a programme that operates in over 60 countries to give small grants to communities for biodiversity conservation , mitigation of Global Climate Change and protection of international waters. At the Mount Kenya World Heritage Site, the Kenya SGP has a special project called COMPACT, funded jointly by GEF and the United Nations Foundation (UNF). What is COMPACT? COMPACT is an acronym that stands for Community Management of Protected Areas Conservation. The COMPACT project, which is operational in an additional 5 countries (Tanzania, Mexico, Belize, Dominica and the Philippines), strives to enhance conservation efforts within World Heritage Sites, through community-based initiatives. COMPACT realizes that communities living around protected areas can work alongside government authorities as essential players in the protection of the protected sites. Purpose of COMPACT in Kenya. COMPACT’s main purpose is to work with NGOs and communities living around Mt Kenya in contributing to the conservation and preservation of the Mt Kenya World Heritage Site, its biological diversity and cultural significance for future generations. Nine projects are already under way , seeking to address some of the threats and challenges that plague the mountain resources.

Kenya East Project 6: Combining Energy Efficient Stoves and Woodlots in Schools Project 7: Conservation and Management of Traditional Sacred Groves and Sites Project 8: Reduction of garbage dumping in the forest Project 9: Documentation and Monitoring of COMPACT projects Projects started in 2002: Project 10: Women groups to raise indigenous tree seedlings Project 11: Brush Against Power Saw- Murals to explain COMPACT projects around Mount Kenya Project 12: Rehabilitation of Aguthi Dam for Improvement of Community Livelihoods on the lee side of Mount Kenya Project 13:Working with the Municipaliy to stop solid waste dumping in the forest Project 14: Community to rehabilitate a crater lake and develop an ecotourism venture around it Project 15:Involving Wildlife clubs in schools for planting indigenous trees in the Mt Kenya forests Projects started in 2003 Project 16: Raising Awareness on the Mountain Bongo It's Repatriation and Introduction to Mt.
