Journalists trained On Capital Markets (30 January 2006)

The workshop on the Role of the Media in Promoting Economic Development through the Capital Markets was held at the Grand Regency Hotel, Nairobi on 30th January 2006. It was sponsored by UNDP under a project it has with the Capital Markets Authority and Nairobi Stock Exchange. The long-term objective of the project is to deepen the understanding of capital markets in Kenya. The project is being undertaken and implemented by the Opportunities component of the UNDP’s programme of support to Kenya, which aims to “achieve expanded opportunities for sustainable production and income diversification”.

The workshop was intended to augment fiscal capacities of journalists reporting on financial and economic issues so as to knowledgeable and accurate information about the capital markets and on corporate and financial issues in a fast-changing world.

The specific objectives of the workshop were primarily;

· To educate financial journalists on intricacies of capital markets Institutional and Product Structure;
· To sensitize the financial journalists on the role of capital markets in economic development.
· To provide an opportunity for the capital markets stakeholders to appreciate the challenges faced by financial journalists in reporting capital markets issues.
· To provide a forum where capital market players will meet and interact with the financial journalists.
· To underscore the role of the Media in Capital Markets development.
