New Head for UNV-Kenya

Ms Annet Mpabulungi Wakabi is the new head of UNV Programme in Kenya. She joined the office in 2007.

Visit of Mr. Ad de Raad, Executive Coordinator, United Nations Volunteers

Mr. Ad de Raad, Executive Coordinator of the United Nations Volunteers Programme, visited Africa for the first time, since assuming the executive coordinator's position and was in the country from 14 - 21 October 2006. The United Nations Volunteers Programme is the UN organization that supports the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals through the promotion of volunteerism, including the mobilization of volunteers. The United Nations Volunteers Programme in Kenya was launched in the mid 1970s. The United Nations Volunteers specialists have been instrumental in providing valuable support and expertise to the Government of Kenya programmes through the Office of the President, Ministry of Planning and National Development, the NEPAD Secretariat as well as the National Aids Control Council to name just but a few.

Ad de Raad joins STAND-UP CAMPAIGN
Mr. Ad de Raad was invited to be the guest of Honour at the "Stand Up" concert at Nairobi Pentecostal Church (NPC) Karen. The "Stand Up Against Poverty, Stand Up for Millennium Development Goals" is a global challenge to set a world record by mobilizing the most number of people to physically and intentionally stand up against poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals in a 24hr period. Other guests at the event were Ms Fatou Diop, Co-ordiantor of UNV programme in Kenya, Ms. Elizabeth Lwanga, UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Ojijo Odhiambo, MDGs Advisor UNDP - Kenya and Mr. George Anyango, Ministry of Planning and National Development. This is a curtain raiser in preparation for the International Day of Poverty Eradication to be observed on 17th October.

FACTS AND FIGURES ABOUT UNV IN KENYA
The United Nations Volunteers Programme in Kenya was launched in mid 1970s with the National component introduced in 1996. The Programme has since then been an active partner through the assignment of international and national UNV volunteers with 177 UNV volunteers recruited as civic educators during the 2002 general elections and 50 UNV community facilitators recruited in November 2005 for the referendum on the draft constitution. There are currently 89 serving UNVs in Kenya 70 national UNVs and 19 international specialists from diverse countries such as, Italy, Ghana, Sudan, Netherlands, France, India, Finland, Great Britain, The Gambia, Germany, Uzbekistan, Brazil, Mexico and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Similarly, there are 150 Kenyan Volunteers serving in other countries such as Afghanistan, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Democratic Republic of Congo, Botswana, Zambia, Uganda, Guyana, Sudan, Trinidad and Tobago and South Africa. It is for this reason that in 2004 Kenya was rated as one of the highest net suppliers of volunteers globally competing with the Philippines.

REQUIREMENT TO BECOME A UN VOLUNTEER

- Age: 25 +
- Education: University degree in any given field
- Professional work experience: 3-5 years
- Fluency in one or more of the five UN languages preferably in English and French
- Good health
- Commitment and interest to supporting the efforts of the others
