Why:
|
The
Growing Sustainable Business initiatives stems from the United Nations
Global Compact Policy Dialogue in 2002 on "Business and Sustainable
Development", globally launched at the World Summit for Sustainable
Development in Johannesburg. The initiative recognizes that little
of the increase in Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) to developing
counties over the last decade goes o the Least Developed Countries.
In addition, it also recognizes that by developing innovative products,
services and approaches, an by working in partnership with other sector,
the private sector can significantly contribute to sustainable development
through its investments. The initiative therefore aims to facilitate
and increase investments and business activities that have a positive
impact on sustainable development and on the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs) in particular on local economic development. The GSB
is currently active in Tanzania, Madagascar, Ethiopia, and Zambia. The
event was organized by UNDP, in collaboration with other UN agencies,
the Government of Kenya, the private sector and civil society representatives. |

Why:
|
The
African Continent and more specifically the Sub Saharan Africa is
faced with a myriad of Problems with regard to its human condition.
According to the Human Development Report 2004, a total of 185 million
people are under nourished; over 44 million children of school going
age are not in school. Even a larger number 273 million are without
access to improved water sources while 299 people do not have access
to adequate sanitation. However the worrying issue is not that the
numbers are big but that currently there are no adequate mechanisms
for addressing this unfortunate trend in a holistic manner.
The Resident Representatives' Cluster meeting hopes to achieve this
by exchanging and sharing vital information that could help these
Sub-Saharan countries as a whole accomplish the MDG target. Countries
represented are: Rwanda, Burundi, Eritrea, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia,
Swaziland, Mauritius, SouthAfrica, Madagascar, Tanzania, Ethiopia,
Botswana, Angola, Kenya, DRCongo, Malawi, Uganda among others. |

Why:

In
2000,189 world leaders made a commitment to achieve the Millennium
Development Goals MDG by 2015.Three of the eight goals relate directly
to Health: Reduce Maternal Health by three quarters, child mortality
by two thirds and combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases. Most
of these health problems in Kenya are due to the high rate of poverty.
Addressing these issues will help achieve the overarching goal of
halving the number of people who live in abject poverty. In Kenya,
steps are being taken to meet the 2015 deadline. This includes initiatives
such as the Millennium Village in Bar Sauri, Kisumu. But, the sustainability
of this process is gravely threatened unless more effort is focused
on fixing inadequate health care delivery systems, putting in place
systems of good governance, and providing higher and more predictable
levels of aid to developing countries. The UN Resident Coordinator's
Office cordially invites you to attend a Press Conference to be held
at Imperial Hotel Kisumu on Saturday 8th January 2005 We look forward
to seeing you there. |

The 2004 International Day for Eradication of Poverty will be commemorated
on 18 th October, at the Kilifi District Headquarters. This year's
theme, Youth - A New Voice for the Millennium Development
Goals presents a great challenge to young communities
whose leadership qualities and determination will make a difference
towards achieving the MDG's by 2015. The Assistant Minister for
Planning and National Development, Hon. Simon Lesirma will officiate
in conjunction with other senior government and UN officials.
This year, the commemoration will launch the UN Volunteers Intermediation
Strategy (UNVIS) Project and officially open the newly renovated

Access to information and other strategic resources
are key elements in building decentralized capacity at district
level. The project therefore links to the government's effort to
enhance e-governance and access to information, a process in which
the Cabinet Office and the Central Bureau of Standards and the Monitoring
and Evaluation Unit have taken a lead. The project builds on a joint

Why:

The United Nations and various other development organizations
will launch an international flash appeal for funds to assist meet
the developing hunger situation in Kenya. Drought conditions and
erratic rainfall patterns have simultaneously caused crop failure
on a massive scale in the agricultural food basket of Kenya. This
has caused serious food shortages and there is fear of famine.
There are currently up to 2.3 million people in Kenya who face
starvation and need emergency relief assistance. This number includes
1.8 million requiring general food distribution and half a million
school children under the schools feeding programme. The total food
requirement for the next six months is estimated at 166,000 metric
tonnes.
Stakeholders to the Flash Appeal include UN Agencies, International
Organisations and Non-Governmental Organisations. They have designed
programmes in six sectors: Food Aid; Health and Nutrition; Water
and Sanitation; Education; Agriculture and Livestock; and Coordination
& Support Services. Using an integrated approach, humanitarian
organisations plan to engage in general food distribution and non-food
interventions in the most severely affected districts of Kenya in
conjunction with emergency distribution of seeds in agricultural
areas where crop losses has also eroded seed stocks. The total Flash
Appeal amounts to US$ 96,468,656 needed to meet

of identity politics around the world.
The Global Human Development Report, commissioned by United Nations

PRESS ADVISORY
What:Launch of The Third Kenya Human Development Report
When & Where: Thursday, 4 March 2004, 9.00am, at
University of Nairobi, Multi-purpose Hall, 8-4-4 Building.
UNDP to Launch The Third Kenya Human Development Report
Lack of effective participatory and good governance are among the main
causes of the poor state of human development in Kenya. The inefficient
management of public resources, corruption and reluctance or total failure
to involve the poor in the development process are some of the manifestations
of this problem.
Apathy, lack of participation by the poor and lack of priority for projects
meant for the poor, have contributed to the poor state of social, economic
and political development in the country. It is against this background
that this report raises debate on the theme "participatory governance
for human development" with a focus on Kenya.
To officiate at the launching ceremony will be the Permanent Secretary
of the Ministry of Labour, Ms. Deborah Ogwai and the UNDP Resident Representative,
Mr. Paul Andre de la Porte. The ceremony is planned for Thursday,
4 March, 2004 at University of Nairobi, Multi-purpose Hall, 8-4-4 Building
at 9.00am to 12.30pm.
The Third Kenya Human Development Report, produced jointly by The Institute
of Development Studies of the University of Nairobi and UNDP, links Participatory
Governance to Human Development. The Report point to the failure by governance
structures to be participatory, transparent, and accountable in the management
of Kenya's resources. The idea of participatory governance makes it imperative
for people and social groups, who should be the beneficiaries of development
efforts, to take a center stage in the formulation of plans, implementation,
monitoring, and evaluation.
UNDP would like to invite you to attend, cover and participate in the
launch of this important national report. Please confirm your participation
to David Maingi by phone or/and e-mail. Your presence and support will
greatly contribute to raising national dialogue on developing Kenya's
Human Development.

UNDP to launch the Global Report on Reducing disaster Risk
Date, Time & Venue:Tuesday, 3 February, 2004, 9.00am,
The Norfolk Hotel, Harry Thuku Rd, Nairobi.
Millions of lives could be saved in coming decades if developing countries
did more to anticipate and reduce the risk from natural disasters, according
to a report to be released by UNDP.
The report, developed by UNDP's Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery,
identifies disasters as largely unresolved development problems. Reducing
Disaster Risk - A Challenge for Development explains
the importance of addressing risk as a development issue. Indeed, development
itself, even actions taken to achieve the Millennium Development Goals,
may create new risks that will need to be addressed.
Kenya's Vice President, H.E. Hon Moody Awori will be the guest of honour
at the African regional launch in Nairobi. The ceremony is planned for
Tuesday, 3 February, 2004 at the Norfork Hotel, from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

The elusive Mountain Bongo, is the world's most spectacular mountain
antelope hunted for many years for its prized trophy. 35 years ago, 20
young mountain bongos were captured in an effort to save a species that
was on serious decline and was threatened with extinction. With the cooperation
of the Kenyan Government, these animals were sent to the United States
to form the nucleus of a breeding program so as to establish safe gene
pools for eventual return should extinction in its natural habitat was
to occur. Having been bred for about 30 years it is now time to return
the first of three consignments of about 60 animals back to Kenya. The
return of the mountain bongo to Mt. Kenya will boost tourism investment
and create employment in the region.
The repatriation has been made possible by a joint effort between Kenya
Wildlife Services, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United
Nations Foundation, United Nations Office for Programme Services, Rare
Species Conservatory Foundation of Florida, Mt. Kenya Game Ranch in Nanyuki
and the William Holden Wildlife Foundation.
UNDP would cordially like to invite you to cover and participate in two
events: The arrival of the Mountain Bongo at JKIA; and a Media Press Conference
at Mt. Kenya Safari Club (refer to scheduled events above). Your presence
and support will greatly contribute to bringing to national and international
attention Kenya's rich tourism heritage and one of Kenya's World Heritage
sites, Mt. Kenya.
