UNDP Kenya Internship Programme

Purpose

To provide important interns with practical experience which complements individual field of study while also benefitting the UN offices to which the intern is assigned;

To promote among the interns a better understanding of major global problems confronting the world and to give them an insight into how the UN attempts to find solutions to these problems, and;

To expose the interns to the UN and its policies and programmes and have them become ambassadors of good will.

Location of Internship Assignment

Internship assignments take place at UNDP Offices in Nairobi.

Language Requirements
In that the UN Secretariat has two working languages, English and French, intern candidates should have fluency in at least one of the two working languages.

Type of Assignments
Although the UNDP Offices are located in Nairobi, assignments involving on-site visits or field work in Nairobi or elsewhere in Kenya are rare. The work is desk-based and may include, but not be limited to Project formulation, monitoring and / or evaluation, research and preparation of papers, preparing work for and participation in intergovernmental meetings, website or database design and maintanance.

Accomodation
Reasonable, low-priced accomodation is not easy to find and interns may stay at a youth hostel or YMCA while searching for longer-term accomodation or for the duration of internship. Attached is a list of some of the recommended accomodation.

Medical and Health

The UN Offices at Nairobi accept no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship.
For all overseas candidates, a certificate of fitness to undergo an internship, duly signed and stamped by a qualified examining physician is required to be submitted upon arrival and before starting an internship.

Selection Procedure

UNDP will try to identify an office which is appropriate to the applicant's expertise and substantive office's need by circulating the application to the appropriate units for evaluation and response.

Acceptance of interns is subject to confirmation by the receiving substantive office desiring to have an intern for the specific period and the availability of office space.

The substantive office will submit Terms of Reference for the proposed intern and will select a Senior Professional to be responsible for the intern's supervision.

Internship candidates having a family relationship with staff members will not be permitted to work in the same unit as the family member; however, they will be considered in accordance with the Internship Policy.

Conditions of Internship
Interns receive no remuneration. Costs of travel and accomodation, living expenses included, are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Interns are solely responsible for obtaining the necessary visas and arranging their travel to their duty station.

Certificate of Attendance
Upon completion of the Internship Programme, the candidate will be awarded a certificate of attendance.
